[Progress of fMRI research in central effect mechanism of acupuncture overseas].

Zhongguo Zhen Jiu. 2013 May; 33(5): 426-30
Lan L, Wu F, Zeng F, Liang FR

Through analysis of oversea published literatures on central effect mechanism of acupuncture in recent years, the general tendency in this filed is discussed so as to provide references for later studies.Pubmed database from January 2009 to May 2012 is retrieved with the key words of acupuncture and fMRI. As a result, 38 articles are included.Healthy subjects are adopted for most of researches. And studies are carried out through three aspects of response characteristics of acupuncture analgesia, response characteristics of acupuncture specificity and duration of acupuncture effect. However, the brain activities of healthy subjects are obviously different from that of patients. Moreover, acupuncture treatment is also different from modern therapies. Therefore, it is held that patients should be adopted as study subjects in the future studies, and various bias in research designation and implementation course should be avoided.

Effects of Anma massage therapy (Japanese massage) for gynecological cancer survivors: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Trials. 2013 Jul 24; 14(1): 233
Donoyama N, Satoh T, Hamano T

Cancer patients and survivors regularly feel anxious about cancer recurrence or death, even after the conclusion of medical treatment, and they are often highly physiologically and psychologically stressed. Massage therapy is one of the most widely used complementary and alternative therapies used in the hope of alleviating such stress and physical and psychological complaints and to improve health-related quality of life. This randomized phase III, two-armed, parallel group, clinical trial was designed after obtaining positive findings in a preliminary study. The primary objective is to verify the effects of continuous Japanese massage therapy, referred to as Anma therapy, for cancer survivors. The secondary objective is to confirm the immediate effects of a single Anma massage session for cancer survivors.Sixty cancer survivors older than 20 years of age who have had histologically confirmed uterine cervical, endometrial, ovarian, fallopian tube or peritoneal cancer in the past, but with no recurrence for more than 3 years since receiving standard medical treatment, are being recruited by gynecologists in medical facilities. In the coordinating office, they are randomly allocated to two groups (n = 30 each): an Anma massage group receiving a 40-min Anma massage session once weekly over a 2-month intervention period (total of eight Anma massage sessions) and a control group being followed by medical doctors and receiving no Anma massage sessions. The primary end point is the severity of physical subjective symptoms that cancer survivors report in daily life, assessed using a Visual Analogue Scale. Secondary end points are urine and saliva analyses, psychological condition and health-related quality-of-life scores as determined on the basis of a self-report questionnaire.Using the evidence-based findings of this trial, medical professionals should be able to explain the benefits conferred by Anma massage to cancer survivors and provide higher-quality information to better inform patients regarding their decisions about whether to receive such therapy.Trial registration: This trial is registered with the UMIN Clinical Trials Registry as UMIN000009097 (https://upload.umin.ac.jp/cgi-open-bin/ctr/ctr.cgi?function=brows&action=brows&type=summary&recptno=R000010670&language=E).

[Meta analysis and analytic hierarchy process-based intervention strategy research of acupuncture for primary depressive disorder].

Zhongguo Zhen Jiu. 2013 May; 33(5): 463-7
Li B, Du YH, Wang X, Li HS, Li D, Jia LY

To acquire the optimal intervention methods of acupuncture on primary depressive disorder (PDD) through high quality clinical evidences of acupuncture for PDD and analytic hierarchy process.Databases of domestic and international medical literatures were retrieved with computer. And high-quality clinical evidences on treatment of PDD with acupuncture were collected. Jadad scale evaluation was adopted to estimate the quality of evidences. RevMan 5.1 software was applied for Meta analysis and statistical appraisal on effect size. Analytic hierarchy process was utilized on acquired clinical evidences to construct the model and matrix to screen the optimal interevention method.Fourteen researches were included. And the result of Meta analysis showed that no statistical differences could be found on clinical control rate, marked effectiveness rate, effective rate and the overall clinical effective rate between acupuncture and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs). The combination of acupuncture and SSRIs could improve the clinical control rate and the overall clinical effective rate. And a 6-week intervention of electro-acupuncture combined with SSRIs was considered as the best intervention for the best overall effect.Based on the present clinical evidences, a 6-week intervention of acupuncture combined with SSRIs is the best intervention on mild or moderate PDD, which can obviously enhance the clinical control rate and the overall clinical effective rate.

Theragnostic pH-sensitive Gold Nanoparticles for the Selective Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering and Photothermal Cancer Therapy.

Anal Chem. 2013 Jul 24;
Jung S, Nam J, Hwang S, Park J, Hur J, Im K, Park N, Kim S

We report a nanoparticle-based probe that can be used for 'turn-on' theragnostic agent for simultaneous Raman imaging/diagnosis and photothermal therapy. The agent consists of 10 nm spherical gold nanoparticle (NP) with pH-responsive ligands and Raman probes on the surface. They are engineered to exhibit the surface with both positive and negative charges upon mildly acidic condition, which subsequently results in rapid aggregations of the gold NPs. This aggregation simultaneously provides hot spots for the SERS probe with the enhancement factor reaching 1.3×10^4 and shifts the absorption to far-red and near-infrared (which is optimal for deep tissue penetration) by the coupled plasmon resonances; this shift was successfully exploited for low-threshold photothermal therapy. The theragnostic gold NPs are cancer-specific because they aggregate rapidly and accumulate selectively in cancerous cells. As the result, both Raman imaging and photothermal efficacy were turned on under cancerous local environment. In addition, the relatively small hydrodynamic size can have the potential for better access to targeted delivery in vivo and facilitated excretion after therapy.

HubMed - Low Level Laser therapy

The effects of low-level laser therapy on palatal mucoperiosteal wound healing and oxidative stress status in experimental diabetic rats.

Photomed Laser Surg. 2013 Jul; 31(7): 315-21
Firat ET, Dağ A, Günay A, Kaya B, Karadede Mİ, Kanay BE, Ketani A, Evliyaoğlu O, Uysal E

Abstract Objective: The biostimulation effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) have recently been demonstrated. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of LLLT on palatal mucoperiostal wound healing and oxidative stress status in experimental diabetic rats. Materials and methods: Forty-two male Wistar rats that weighed 250-300 g were used in this study. Experimental diabetes was induced in all of the rats using streptozotocin. A standardized full thickness wound was made in the mucoperiosteum of the hard palates of the rats using a 3 mm biopsy punch. The rats were divided into groups: 1 (control group, non- irradiated), and 2 (experimental group, irradiated). Treatment using a GaAlAs laser at a wavelength of 940 nm and at dose of 10 J/cm(2) began after surgery, and was repeated on the 2nd, 4th, and 6th days post-surgery. Seven animals from each group were killed on the 7th, 14th, and 21st day after surgery. Biopsies were performed for the histological analysis and blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture for biochemical analysis. Results: The histopathological findings revealed reduced numbers of inflammatory cells, and increased mitotic activity of fibroblasts, collagen synthesis, and vascularization in rats in group 2. The total oxidative status was significantly decreased in the laser-treated group on the 21st day. Conclusions: LLLT elicits a positive healing effect on palatal mucoperiostal wounds, and modulates the oxidative status in experimental diabetic rats.

Self-collection for high-risk hpv detection in Brazilian women using the careHPV™ test.

Gynecol Oncol. 2013 Jul 20;
Lorenzi AT, Fregnani JH, Resende JC, Neto CS, Villa LL, Longatto-Filho A

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Brazilian women. High-risk (hr) human papillomavirus (HPV) persistence is the primary cause of cervical neoplasia. Early detection of hr-HPV is important for identifying women at risk for developing cervical lesions. Approximately 85% of new cases of cervical cancer worldwide and 50% of the total cervical cancer deaths occurred in developing countries. Here, a new methodology to support a cervical cancer screening program was evaluated in women from various Brazilian regions.Two thousand women aged 18-77years were enrolled in an opportunistic cervical cancer screening program and were randomized into self-vaginal or health professional-guided cervical sampling groups. The Qiagen careHPV™ test was performed on all samples. Pap tests were performed on all women using liquid-based cytology.Positive hr-HPV results were obtained in 12.3% (245/2,000) of women; similar rates were observed in self- or health professional-collected samples. Eighty-nine percent (1719/2,000) of cervical cytologies classified as normal were negative to hr-HPV. Among the cytological samples, 36.6% classified as ASC-US+were positive to hr-HPV; 78.8% of LSIL and 75.0% to HSIL.Self-sampled and health professional-sampled vaginal/cervical specimens did not differ in their rates of detection of hr-HPV. Therefore, HPV DNA testing in self-sampled vaginal cells is an alternative to primary screening in low-resource settings.
