Low level laser treatments for hair loss are the newest treatment tool being used against receding hairlines, bald spots, and thinning hair. The type of laser used has been described as soft or cool Unlike other lasers used in medical procedures it does not generate heat. Its light comes from the cooler, red part of the spectrum. The stimulating effect of laser light on hair follicles was noticed as far back as 1964. Experiments performed by Professor Alfred Mester in Hungary demonstrated a rejuvenating effect on hair follicles. The same experiments showed increased blood vessel growth. One theory put forward to explain the laser light's effect is that the increased blood flow to the scalp brings more nutrients to the follicles and stimulates growth.
